In my capacity as a rideshare drive (both Uber and Lyft) I have occasion to pick people up at the beach. I am currently sitting at home, several White Claws in, looking at Uber surge at the beach wondering why I wasn’t out driving at the beach. Aside from the alcohol in the White Claws the answer dawned on me.
Nothing good would come of it. I am a straight male. I would be put in the position of potentially picking up scantily clad female riders. By today’s standards, openly admitting that those female riders look pleasing to me would be tantamount to admitting that I suffer from “toxic masculinity.” And yet denying the same would be lying to myself and my maleness. Instead, rather than earning an income I avoid the conflict altogether.
